Events & Community Support

Ancient philosophers and recent studies suggest that talking about death can actually makes us happier. That when we have death awareness somewhere in our peripheral vision, when we have accepted that at some point we all die, that it brings our life meaning. We don’t take time, people, or experiences for granted. We start prioritizing our health, going on vacations, and taking risks! We become more grateful for each beautiful day we get to live our fabulous lives because we are always aware of how short life is.

Easier said than done, right? Death anxiety and its associated fears is a real thing that can be so hard to work through. Even when we want to have a better relationship with death, how do we do that when we live in a society that avoids this topic as much as possible? This isn’t common talk around the dinner table and reflecting on it alone brings up too much! So, when we aren’t forced to face it, we would rather watch our favorite show on Netflix and push it out of our minds. I get that. I also know from professional experience that this avoidance leads to deaths that I honestly can’t believe anyone would want for themselves or those they love.

The purpose of my educations and workshops is to give a safe space where you can reflect, talk about, process, and ultimately prepare for your death. It may feel super uncomfortable at first, but I’ve got you! These events are often not somber or depressing as people may assume. Instead, the primary focus is on developing a better relationship with death so you can live so much more fully today.

  • That often dreaded and feared H word that is so incredibly misunderstood! This education walks through what hospice and palliative care are and are not, how to access these services along with picking the right organization to meet your unique needs, and tips and tricks from someone who has helped hundreds of people develop their plans for hospice.

Since A Better Ending is not connected to any healthcare system, there is no sale pitch. Only education on options available so individuals can make the best and most informed decision for themselves and those they love the most.

  • Part 1 Courageous Conversations

Talking about death and dying is often considered a difficult and uncomfortable topic, leading to avoidance in our culture. However, this avoidance can have profound consequences for ourselves and our loved ones. In this workshop, we aim to break this societal norm and empower participants to engage in open discussions about their values, wishes, and goals for their health care, as well as their end-of-life preferences. A safe and supportive environment is created for attendees to explore essential reflections using prompts. Guidance on how to have these courageous conversations with loved ones and medical teams is provided along with a handout filled with reflective prompts and questions. We firmly believe that proactive communication is the key to not only ensuring your end-of-life wishes are honored but reduces the burden on those you are closest to.

    Length 60-75 minutes

    Part 2 Let’s Make a Plan

In the latter part of the series, delve into a comprehensive educational session focused on translating your wishes, values, and goals into a legally binding and detailed document. Receive guidance on the critical process of selecting a healthcare agent, accompanied by information on CPR and other life-sustaining treatments, end-of-life care, and various options. Additionally, explore post-death considerations such as funeral planning, organ donation, and autopsy. This knowledge is imperative for making informed and personalized decisions. Clearly outlining your wishes in a healthcare directive is one of the most significant gifts you can provide to those closest to you. Dealing with the loss of a loved one is challenging enough; knowing how to honor their wishes makes the process a bit more manageable.

    Length 60-75 minutes

  • In an engaging workshop, participants will embark on an exploration of the history and significance of obituaries. Guided through a step-by-step process, attendees will learn the art of crafting a meaningful obituary, breaking it down into manageable and heartfelt steps. Each participant will receive a comprehensive handout, serving as a valuable guide to navigate the obituary-writing journey. Individuals will be empowered to create their own first draft, emphasizing the power of self-expression and encouraging participants to embrace the telling of their own story. The ultimate goal is not just to write an obituary but to craft a beautiful legacy—a timeless gift for their loved ones.

Length: 60-90 minutes dependent on the writing engagement

  • Death anxiety can be traced as far back as to some of the earliest recorded writings in history and continues to be present and relevant today. Delve into the multifaceted reasons why we fear death and address the pressing question: how do we navigate the anxiety that manifests from these fears? Gain valuable insights into understanding the nature of death-related anxiety, its impact on individuals, and crucial coping strategies. This session aims to empower participants with information and skills that not only enhance their current quality of life but expand their understanding and resilience in the face of life's inevitable journey.

    60-75 minutes

  • Medical aid in dying legislation first appeared in Minnesota in 2016. It continues to gain momentum and support as the years progress. A 2023 survey at the MN State Fair suggests 73% of Minnesotans support legislation that would allow this end-of-life choice. This educational session offers insights into the MN End-of-Life Option Act, shedding light on its provisions, and delves into the practices of medical aid in dying in Oregon, as the MN bill is modeled after their Death with Dignity Act. This is not a place for advocacy or arguing positions on this often dichotomist and complex topic, rather a supportive space to better understand legislation that has the potential for being implemented in the future.

    60-75 minutes

  • Rosie exemplifies the essence of a true medical social worker who poised to educate, equip and empower all people with the appropriate and meaningful end of life journey resources. The information comes with direct access to step by step processes that will enable anyone to officially determine and document their end of life plan of care with designation of authorized agents. This informative presentation provided me with the necessary tools and resources to begin the necessary and courageous conversations about end of life planning with family and friends. I am so grateful for the opportunity to learn from this experience.

    Dr. Micheal Blevins

  • Rosie is uniquely qualified and gifted to guide us through critical conversations of end-of-life preparation, not only so we can alleviate added stress for ourselves and loved ones during an already overwhelming time, but also so we can lean into better loving our lives today, and everyday. Death is something we so rarely discuss, or even acknowledge, but having a courageous conversation around it can allow us to live more fully for today. I highly recommend Rosie and A Better Ending!!

Plan Well, Live Well: A Health Care Directive Workshop

I have had multiple requests for a health care directive workshop be brought up north so I listened!

A health care directive is a written document that states how you want medical decisions to be made if you lose the ability to make decisions for yourself.

I get its hard to think about having a time in your life where you will need this document and instructions, but it does happen at one point or another. For almost every single one of us. Having a clear and detailed health care directive makes that challenging time so much easier on yourself, your medical team, and those you love.

Now you may be like my parents who have a health care directive. While when I took a peak at it there was zero clarity on their wishes, values, and goals for their health care and end-of-life care. The information that is truly needed! Can you believe that!??! MY PARENTS!!!

So whether your like my parents who need to update theirs or this is your first time embarking on this important task, know I am here to help you every step of the way! You will also leave with it notarized, making it a legally sound document. And saving you lots of money from having to do it at an attorneys office.

Please check out the link below to learn more information and to register. Seats are limited and I'm really not just saying that as a sales tactic. Legit seats are limited as I am only there for one night and can only do this well with a certain amount of folks. So, please get your registration in!

Brewing Thoughts About Death

This workshop is for people who want to better understand death and dying, who want to be prepared, and who want to start processing their mortality and how that influences one to live more fully.

I want to be as transparent as possible as I know it takes courage to do this. I want you to know exactly what to expect at this event. I will guide you through a mindfulness exercise that puts you in the mindset of what your own end-of-life experience could look like from diagnosis to your last breath. Education on common experiences are woven through to give an understanding of what many people go through. After the exercise if over we will spend time processing what that was like and address any questions you may have.

Courageous Conversations

I have supported many patients and their loved ones as they navigate challenging decisions related to medical treatments, code status, hospice, and end-of-life wishes. This is always a better experience when they are not in a moment of crisis or stress, when they have time to engage in thoughtful discussion and processing with those they love and professionals they trust. So, lets start the conversation!

Conversational tools will be discussed with handouts provided on questions we should be asking ourselves, how do we break the ice and talk to loved ones about our wishes, and what your healthcare providers need to know. Healthcare directives and POLSTS will be discussed in detail so people are better prepared to complete these essential documents.

I will be providing education for approximately 60 minutes and will remain available for 30 minutes after for any questions you may have.
